Hyphal Fidelity Speakers

Hyphal Fidelity is a sculptural provocation in the form of a pair of bookshelf speakers grown from mycelium. It integrates repurposed speaker components framed in recyclable aluminium—a living sound system that transmits audio through a quiet, fungal logic. The reishi body forms intricate patterns of hyphal threads and early fruiting forms that dampen sharp resonances and absorb reflected sound. Blending elements of engineering with expressive materiality, this one-of-a-kind piece invites us to reconsider how we design for sound—and explore new materials that challenge our expectations.

Organism

Fungi

Species

Ganoderma lucidum

Dimensions

40 x 30 x 26 cm

Brand

10th Floor Studio

Edition

Limited edition of 1 pair, 2023.

Impact

The speakers have been designed with in-house cultivated, home-compostable reishi mycelium, fed with wood chips and sawdust waste supplied from a local cabinet manufacturer.

Composition & Care

Reishi Mycelium (Ganoderma lucidum), Aluminium, Klipsch KG 1.2 Drivers. Includes “Sounds of Decomposition” audio track produced by Entropic (for 10th Floor Studio) for the custodian of Hyphal Fidelity Speakers – “As the shapes of objects around us evolve, how do we honour artefacts

from the past? Decomposition provides access to enriched nutrients, food for new

ideas. The composition was created by decomposing hip hop classics beyond

recognition.”

The Klipsch unpowered speakers will require an audio amplifier compatible with 8 Ohm drivers. Please note that no formal acoustic profile testing has been conducted for these sculptures, and audio playback may differ from conventional expectations.

The reishi mycelium has been dehydrated and is no longer living. Keep the speakers in a dry indoor environment. Avoid exposure to moisture or high humidity. Dust gently using compressed air or a soft dry brush. Do not use water, cleaning solutions, or abrasive materials. The mycelium surface is unique and can be delicate.

10th Floor Studio is the collective works of Jerome Tavé and Kyle Lawson, who centre fungal-inspired narratives, material experimentations, and cross-species explorations to challenge the underlying philosophy of sterility and alienation native to our built environments. Their unexpected compositions explore futures where humanity finds greater integration with other lifeforms, drawing attention to ecological and social issues and inviting others into a realm of collaborative transformation.

This unique pair of speakers has been crafted using in-house cultivated, home-compostable reishi mycelium, nourished by wood chips and sawdust waste from a local cabinet manufacturer. The recyclable aluminium structure supports the expansive fungal body, guiding its growth while allowing space for the organism to develop independently. The result is a one-of-a-kind sculpture—a product of human and mycelial collaboration. To enhance fungi’s regenerative potential, each speaker incorporates repairable drivers salvaged from discarded audio devices, reimagined within these living mycelium enclosures.
